Digital News - WIP Script and Breakdown

Here is the WIP script that my group has. As you can see, there's different colour coding to show the different input that the guys had and what I did. Below is the script and the justification video to supplement the script.

Digital News - Personal Critique and Feedback From Helen

So heres our feedback from helen I recorded on my phone, there was a few things I that I did from this is that our branding and our characters don't match. Ren is too formal, so therefore there needs to be a few changes. We want our channel to represent the younger generation and be techy, but overall quite informal, the broadcast package will be adjusted to take more of the 30 second news where the anchor stands up and talks while a screenis behind them, I think that this will fit our channel perfectly, we can still use the broadcast package but remove the desk, as it gives the wrong look across. The troll package is yet to be filmed, so we'll see what we adjust in that department later

Fiction Adaptation - Channelling my Idea, Research

Upon thinking about my idea and reviewing the poem I am studying, I thought it would be a good idea to go with something completely experimental and something that I have studied before in my own time a lot. So I am covering a poem called Anthem For a Doomed Youth, by Wilfried Owen. Basically, long story short, Owen had really bad PTSD when he wrote this poem. So what I want to do is follow that logic. Owen was an intelligant man but unstable, so how can i adapt that? well, here's what I have come up with.

I studied some events that innvolve this type of person, mainly shootings and mass killings by an individual, as i said, intelligant but unstable. Exhibit number one, Andrew Berwick (Anders Brievik), I'll post some news articles that you can look at and see for yourself that these people are very intelligent and articulit in what they were doing.

This Doc on Brievik is brilliant, really captures how intelligantly insane this man was! He did it for a cause he believed in, whether or not others agreed with it.

I then looked up pretty much the one that started it all, the Columbine Massacre. I won't make this too much of a big deal, but they meticulously planned what they were going ot do and carried it out, I wa\nt this to reflect in my final film. There's lots of docs out there about columbine that I have studied, plus the overall wikipedia page on the massacre and their methodologies when killing and reasons for.

I'm not glorifying this violence and killing at all, that's why I want to cover it in my film, I think that its something that is always overlooked; the social recluse killing massess before killing himself. I plan to capture the insanity of the situation and that these people are damaged and need help.

Basically, my story will follow the story of a man (John Doe) who is meticulously planning a day of execution, with the Poem serving as his monologue. The working title will be called the monologue of insanity, cool name I think personally. I want to relate him as close to Brievik as possible, even referencing his manifesto that he wrote (2083) and the islamification of europe that he is pissed off about.

Right, heres a basic outline of what I want my script to achieve.

Him setting up a budget camcorder.

Him setting up weapons in cutaways.

Him referencing the government

Him referencing 2083

Him preparing armour, masks and what not/

Him uploading the video to the internet.

Him leaving his small apartment.

Digital News - Voxpopping in Canterbury

No doubt you have read some of my team members blogs, so I won't beat around the bush. My input on the day was to be a runner/shadow photographer to make sure that I got lots of shots for the blogs that perfectly illustrated what we were doing on that day. To make it simple, I'll upload a picture and have the justification underneath. The big problem with this day was that nobody was willing to talk to us, literally over the space of two hours we only managed to get around 7 or 8, which I got to be honest is complete bullshit. But I am happy with what we did get. We tried different psychologies when talking to the public. Firstly we just let roxanne ask and when she was coming up short, andrei asked. Not saying that Roxanne badly executed it, but Andrei has a different approach.

Before I get into the photo's I did manage to snag some videos. I figured Andrei was all tied up doing his thing that I could get some bonus material. Firstly was an out of focus shot that would be good for displaying text over it, kind of like a backdrop. It was basically the public walking past an EE shop. We can use this as you can't identify who people are and its in a public place. woo.

I then got two reaction shots of people checking their phones for the U2 album, it'll work but its a bit shaky!

Now on to the photos!

Mark is looking very nervous about the day ahead!

There were many different locations that me and Roxanne surveyed on the day and thought about the likeliness of using. This was a great shot but the only problem we had was it was in the main high street. Which was a problem as we would be in the way of the flow of people. This goes for the image below too.

Another great shot! Again the only problem is the complete reverse of the first one! ITS TOO FAR AWAY FROM THE PUBLIC! I'm sure people wouldn't mind being in our report but if we yank them three miles away from where they're meant to go, they'll get a little narked. Same with the two images below

This was a nice cobble stone type road that was relatively near the main high street, but not many people actually came down the road to ask. But from these pictures you can start to see who was doing what. Andrei was our main camera guy and mark did the sound and asked the questions.

Obligatory cool walk through the town.

'The day is going well'

Team setup pt 2.

Andrei the real deal pt 1.

Andrei the real deal pt 2.

Finally managing to get somebody to talk to!

Finally managing to get somebody to talk to!

Andrei and Mark revising the interview questions.

Roxanne guiding over an intervewee, the day started picking up after the first three or so.

Great shot of mark in action as sound and interviewer. We also managed to get a quick recording of her using her phone which was absolutely splendid!

So that was the day! it looks like I didn't do much but that was because we were a four man group! Mark might as well have done the sound as he was interviewing, too many chefs spoil the broth so to speak. at least with my role I managed to get some really nice pictures that illustrated what we were doing.

Fiction Adaptation - First Draft Script

Here is my first script! It feels a lot shorter than what I think it should be but it captures what I want to convey, a mentally unstable dude who is intelligent. The imagery on screen will help me convey my message perfectly, I will be doing a shot list to supplement this so it thickens out my vision. I have started to cast my team and actors for this film and what gear I will be using for this film. In terms of adapting the original media, I didn't include or add to the audio, so overall its a perfect translation of the poem. However, I did take the words at face value. Here is the script I hope you like it!

Digital News - Press Release Workshop

So we have been given a press release from a /gov website that we have to create a script from. So this blog post will be informal notes that may or may not make sense.

We have been put into small groups and asked to come up with a script based on a press release that we were individually given. It was actually a very good teaching activity as it made me think how I would execute something I really don't know nothing about but using research from the internet come up with a script that could be used to be broadcast on TV. Below is the script that me and mark came up with. The key to this task for me is to read between the lines and not just copy what the press release says. Therefore, we have to be impartial.

The point of the article we have been given is to explain the system that the government have set up to allow unemployed entrepreneurs to set up businesses. So it's clear that this is aimed at the general public. Also it could be subliminally referring to potential entrepreneurs in the unemployment  sector that did not know about this scheme. So the script that needs to be written needs to be  to the point so it catches the readers eye. Referring to the lecture earlier (30/09/14) we need to put a lead in that is clear, to the point and doesn't mess about in what it wants to convey. Also to note is something that I watched earlier on the BBC academy website in using one syllable words like Churchill did in his famous speech in 1940.

A few lead in examples.

'A groundbreaking new scheme has reached a milestone achievement, as more than 50,000 new business have been set up since its inception'

'Unemployed people have been offered a chance to become successful business entrepreneurs due to a new scheme that has recently reached its 50,000 milestone.'

Digital News - Group Assembly, Weekly Video Conference 1

This is our first video as a group, we have gone with the name ARMA (Portmenaux of our names) but it also represents Alternative Revolutionary Media Accociation. We cover a range of different items in this hangout session, and I feel I gained a lot of information from listening to other members of the group. Next time we plan on having fixed agendas and written minutes afterwards to therefore inform whoever is reading this blog what is going on and it is very straightforward.
